Francis Bacon @ The MET
“I’ve always hoped in a sense to be able to paint the mouth like Monet painted a sunset.”
This week I finally got around to seeing the Francis Bacon Retrospective at the Met. This exhibit marks the centenary of his birth in 1909 and gives an opportunity to appreciate his career as an artist and the growth in his work and pyschology. There’s just something about his mark making that has pure energy transplanted onto a canvas. The inside looks into his studio and work space further highlight the genius that is present in abandon. His palette stood out to me and I couldn’t help but be lost in his use of color. After reading the above quote on the wall, I couldn’t help but think if all his work was really based upon this one part that we use not only to express ourselves but to communicate, consume, etc.
