The Veiled Christ (Study)

I was totally surprised to see this up at the Met…and then I wondered why this piece rather than one of the images we more closely relate Kehinde Wiley with. I put this into context with the Carrie Mae Weems lecture from a few weeks ago, and the issue of how much value is placed on art whose main audience may not be white. Now, ironically, I think this painting is a perfect addition to the institution as it reflects upon itself, the history it relates to, and the people who view it.
