Kwesi
I was checking out my friend Kwesi’s blog earlier, and fell in love with some of the hairstyles the women he photographs have…not to mention the romantic feeling his photos vibrate with.
Check out his blog.

Museum for African Art in Harlem
This building will open this fall/winter…and of course I was excited until I found out it was just an excuse to build more condos. Guess you win some you lose some.

I’m sure they will have a nice collection, they do have El Anatsui lined up for their Inagural exhibit…but it still makes me a little mad.
What’s so Funny about Peace Love and Understanding?
June 26th – August 1st 2008
There’s still a couple of days left to catch this show, and I would most definitely advise doing so.
Their press release: So, we all wonder this summer….
what’s so funny about peace, love and understanding?
….And as I walked on Through troubled times My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes So where are the strong And who are the trusted? And where is the harmony? Sweet harmony.
Cause each time I feel it slippin’ away, just makes me wanna cry. What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding? ……
from Album, Armed Forces, by Elvis Costello and The Attractions
Mike Estabrook, Daniele Galliano, Chitra Ganesh,
Akira Ikezoe, Yoshio Itagaki, Anton Kannemeyer,
Fabienne Lasserre, Tomokazu Matsuyama,
Christopher McEvoy and William Villalongo
This group show puts a satirical lens on the flaws of society. I loved the work of Anton Kannemeyer. Unfortunately, I missed his solo show at Jack Shainman earlier this year =(. Read more about him here.

Beyond Representation
Beyond Representation
June 5th – July 30th 2008

JeongMee Yoon had a nice set of photos at “Beyond Representation” at the Jenkins Johnson Gallery that wonderfully explored color and how it defines lives. The show is running concurrently with ” Celebrate Summer”.
Cool!
Cool
July 10th – August 15th
WIsh I could’ve made it to the opening day when artist Miwa Koizuma made one of a kind ice cream! Overall I was tickled by the idea of this show: getting your mind of the heat through paintings, photos, and sculptures that are filled with cold.

Rudy Shepherd (check out his blog i’m such a fan of his work) photographed himself in a bear suit in the cold for this piece, “Ursa Major Contemplating the Meaning of the Universe 1″. It’s somewhat satirical…and me likes.
The sub-theme of the show, refrigerators, worked surprisingly well as a way to gain personal insight and better understand a person’s self.

blipster
just came across this term today;
the urban dictionary def:
1. blipster a person who is black and also can be stereotyped by appearance, musical taste, and/or social scene as a hipster. That (black) person, wearing asics tigers, black-rimmed glasses, and dancing to the new be your own pet song is a “blipster.”
Famous Blipster: the singer from Bloc Party.
Bill Owens
Bill Owens
June 26th – August 1st 2008

I remember my younger days when I didn’t really enjoy visiting photo shows, but times have changed now that I’ve fallen in love with the medium. Bill Owens is definitely a great photographer of our times. This show has a mix of his older and new work; the images span from images of anti-war protests to Sponge Bob Square Pants sitting on a park bench. He has consistently succeeded in capturing the essence of middle class America either on its highs or lows, or the incomprehensible.
